TV Discussion #2: Riverdale

Let’s talk about the second episode of Riverdale.

I am watching this show on Netflix.

Chapter Two – Touch of Evil

Ugh! I will give this show one more episode. So far, it’s more drama than murder mystery. I don’t like it. If they would focus more on the mystery, I’d probably like it better, but they don’t. I don’t know how much longer I’ll keep watching it for all the drama. I don’t put up with drama in my personal life, and I won’t deal with it in a show either. I want to know who killed Jason, but I really don’t like everything else about the show.

Let’s start with Archie. His relationship with his teacher is nothing to laugh about. He’s – What? Fifteen? Sixteen? And he’s in a sexual relationship with his music teacher? No. No, no, no. Ugh! No! And it’s not so much that he’s in a relationship with her, but that he’s under the illusion that she friggin’ CARES about him outside their sexual relationship. Bleh! Come on, Archie! I thought you were intelligent!

The girls are still as bitchy as ever. Cheryl, I’ve just about planted as Queen B in that regard, but Betty… Sweet, wholesome Betty was just as bad this time, choosing Cheryl over Veronica because Veronica had the nerve to tell her the truth. Come on, Betty. You’re better than that. At least, I thought you were.

There are so many things going on in the episode. And while a lot of it seems to tie back to the murder in some way, or at least leads you to believe it does, most of it seems to focus on everyone trying to be as mean as possible to everyone else. Seriously, I wanted to punch nearly everyone in the face at least once. Not just the kids, but the adults too!

I don’t trust Betty’s mother. I would really like to know what she does for a living, besides get into everyone else’s business that is. She’s insane, controlling, and I’m pretty certain she paid off the coroner to make some dastardly accusations. He accepted a large sum of money from her in exchange for something that hasn’t been revealed, but I’m pretty certain – for all her hate of the Blossom family – that it isn’t good.

For that reason, I’m not positive that Jason Blossom’s autopsy will be accurate, which irks me to know end. I seem to really like the word “irked” lately, but that accurately describes most of my feelings during this episode.

Betty’s mom is a shady bitch. Betty pulls a bitch move. Archie is an idiot. Veronica seems to be the only genuinely nice person. She screwed up, and she’s trying to make up for it. Fred is as awesome as ever. He’s like the only one though.

I would have liked to have seen more going on with Veronica’s mother after she found the bag of money, but no dice there. I did like the fact that we see her finally get a new job. Yes, she is a waitress, but it makes me believe that she’s at least trying to be a good person, and that maybe I was wrong with my first impression of her. At least, I hope that’s the case. I really want to like at least SOME of the adults in this show. For real.

Murder Mystery Theories

By the end of the episode, the first arrest is made, and while I did suspect the person taken into custody of some unsavory nature, especially after a particular scene where she broke down and said some things that were just… off… I did not expect the confession she made.

Favorite Character

I wish Fred Andrews had more scenes. I swear, he says the best things. He’s the greatest guy. He’s still my favorite character of the entire show, even though I’m warming up to Jughead. He’s got the most level head and seems to actually USE his brain.

Memorable Quotes

“It’s called necrophilia, Reggie. Can you spell it?” ~ Jughead Jones

“Archie, if you know it’s the right thing to do, even though it’s tough, even though it might… It might cost you. You gotta do it.” ~ Fred Andrews

“We’re not going to hug in front of this whole town. *laughs* So why don’t we both just do that bro thing where we nod like douches and mutually suppress our emotions.” ~ Jughead Jones

Have you watched this show? What did you think about it?
