TV Discussion #3: Ouran High School Host Club

This week’s discussion is… you guessed it… Ouran High School Host Club. Long title. Amazing show.

I’ve been watching this show on Netflix. As an anime, it is in Japanese, but the version I’m watching is English subbed. I don’t know Japanese. Sorry folks.

Episode 1: Starting Today, You Are a Host!

For those who don’t know, this is an anime, which is something I watch from time to time. Not a lot of animes interest me, and most of the more popular ones are just not for me. I’m looking at you, Naruto and Bleach. However, this one is one I’ve watched before (although I don’t know if I ever saw the whole thing) and loved, loved, loved.

The concept is that a commoner, who has earned their way into this prestigious boarding school (private school) tries to hide in an abandoned music room only to discover it’s not abandoned after all. In an attempt to get away from the school’s host club, a vase worth 8 million yen (which equates to $72,732 in the US) is knocked over, and the commoner is pulled into the host club to pay it back. They mistaken the commoner for a guy, but… Surprise, surprise. Girl. With short hair. And no boobs. Hahaha! Jokes on you, boys!

Still, it’s amusing as all get out. The episodes aren’t very long and I’ve basically laid out the plotline of the entire first episode. Only one of the boys in the host club recognizes Haruhi as a girl from the start, and the rest of the episode is about all her antics that slowly reveal her true gender to the rest of them, ending with the leader of the host club.

One of the main things I love about this episode is how different each of the characters are.

There is the leader of the host club, Tamaki, is definitely a narcicist, but he’s got a heart of gold. While he comes off as someone you wouldn’t take seriously, he does step up to the plate when it’s required of him to be serious.

Kyoya is the brainiac of the group, and also the first to know Haruhi isn’t a boy at all. He is secretive (I’m betting he thought it hilarious to see how long everyone else would take to realize Haruhi was a girl) and intelligent, and how he puts up with Tamaki, who’s his best friend, is beyond me.

Hikaru and Kaoru are the twins and they remind me a lot of Fred and George. They do have this weird brotherly love gimic they do for the host club girls, and I’m not entirely sure it’s an act, but they are funny and loveable and it’s great.

Honey is the shortest and acts like a child. Seriously, is he even old enough to be in high school? Still, he’s completely adorable and I want to pinch his little cheeks.

Mori is the quietest of the host club members. Seriously, I don’t think he said a word the entire episode. He carries Honey around and acts more like a servant to Honey than anything, but it’s clear he cares for him.

Then there’s Haruhi who does the things the simplest ways, but still manages to cause oh and ah. She doesn’t fret over gender titles. Honestly, I don’t think she never realized the boys didn’t recognize her for a girl. I mean, once Tamaki finds out, the following conversation happens:

Tamaki Suou: So… you’re a girl?
Haruhi Fujioka: Biologically speaking, yeah.

Also, she remained quiet when it was obvious she was bullied, and while I would normally be raging about the bullying, she handled it in such a way that all I could say was, “Good for you, chicka, for not stooping to that bitch’s level!”

They’re all so different from one another, it’s awesome, and I can’t wait to watch the rest of the show.

Favorite Character

Haruhi is my favorite character. Hands down. She is amazing. Her ability to not put up with Tamaki’s crap, her natural way of going with the flow, and how hard-working she is. Yes. All of it. She’s just awesome.

Memorable Quotes

“Listen, Senpai, I don’t really care whether you guys recognize me as a boy or a girl. In my opinion it’s more important for a person to be recognized for who they are rather than for what sex they are.” ~ Haruhi Fujioka

Have you watched this show? What did you think of it? Talk to me about it!
