TV Discussion #14: Your Lie in April

I’ve missed a week of discussions because I’m a slacker. Today, we’re discussing a new anime I started watching called Your Lie in April.

I’ve been watching this show on Netflix.

Episode #2: Friend A

The three friends enter Toma Hall to watch Kaori play the violin. The last time Kousei was in Tama Hall, he bombed his last performance. The competitors are all playing the same piece, but when Kaori comes on stage, she plays the song in a completely different way than the piece was written, making everyone (except the judges of the contest) stand up and fall in love with her playing.

Honestly, I didn’t even know the song was the same. It was so different than the pieces before it.

After her performance, there was an intermission in the competition, and something Kaori says brings back flashbacks in Kousei’s mind of his mother. She mentions she doesn’t care about the competition, and he remembers his mother’s words about the only place that matters is first.

Watari is a bit of a womanizer, but he gives Kousei a bit of advice that I liked as well. He has a girl who likes him but he’s got another young lady he seems to be courting too. Watari’s a bit of a weird one. Every girl seems to like him, but he doesn’t seem to stick with just one. As such, it’s hard to believe that a young lady like Kaori is interested in him, but I guess it’s more because love is strange.

Favorite Character

Kaori Miyazono is a strange young woman. She is free-spirited and wild, but willful to those she finds disrespect her. She’s outgoing and a little bit reckless, but I love her all the same.

Memorable Quotes

“That’s got nothing to do with it. Cute girls have crushes too, man, just like the rest of us. And because she’s in love, she’s even cuter to you. So you fall for her, even knowing it’s not going to happen.” ~ Ryouta Watari

Have you watched this show? What did you think of it? Talk to me about it!
