2018 Book Unhaul #1

Today I have my first unhaul of the year. I have a bunch of books I’m going to be getting rid of. Most will be going to my library (even if they don’t take donations, they have a free shelf where people can put books).

There will be several more throughout the year because I am completely out of shelf space and I need to figure out what to do about it. (There is *a lot* of stuff in my house.)

Using a different camera and a different editing software than usual and noticed after both filming and editing this footage 3x that the mouth movements and the sound aren’t matching up with one another. I don’t know why and I don’t know how to fix it… yet. I’ve got to play around with a few settings to see if I can fix that in the future.

Where Have I Been?!?

Did you miss me? Wonder where I’ve been? Well, wonder no longer because I’m back… Err… Sorta… I need to review what I really want to post about on this blog now, but for now, I’m thinking I’ll post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

If you’re new to my blog, and I’ve seen a lot of people start following me despite my not adding any content, so I’m not certain what’s going on there. If someone tagged me in a post I haven’t gotten to, then great! Thanks! I owe you one!

Anyway, above is a video talking about what’s been going on the past couple of months – basically since November. TL;DW I’ve been dealing with burnout, depression about project progression, internet issues, and illness. Plus, snow. Which I don’t think I mentioned in the video actually… Hmmm…

So, more to come soon-ish, and hopefully I’ll get a schedule going soon. Until next time!

Shifters & Mages Update #8

This is going to be an extreeemely short update. I’m still working on Warren’s Rage, but I am making progress. I’m not writing every day as I’d like, but when I do, I write at least 1500 words, so I’m not going to complain.

That said, NaNoWriMo is coming up, and I really need to step up my game in order to get the projects done this year that I plan to get done. Yeah…

Soon, I’ll have my NaNo post up explaining what I plan to work on, and all that jazz. Keep an eye out for that!

Original Due Date: 10-10-17
Updated Due Date: 10-15-17
New Due Date: 10-31-17

Current Word Count: 20,285
Word Count Goal: 25,000

Shifters & Mages Update #7

I would like to tell you that I met my goal and completed Warren’s Rage, but I can’t…

I am not unhappy with my progress with this story. I came at it like it was a first draft at first, but now I’m tackling it as if it’s a first and second draft. Yup… I’ve been editing as I go. Shame on me. I’ve been writing a little bit and then going back and editing the bit I wrote the day prior before I start writing for the current day.

That being said, I have a stronger first-ish draft that I should only have to edit through once before I shoot it off to my editor. *crosses fingers* Here’s hoping.

Original Due Date: 10-10-17
Updated Due Date: 10-15-17
New Due Date: 10-31-17

Current Word Count: 16,166
Word Count Goal: 25,000

There is only about 9K (9,000 words) left to write in order to complete the story, and I actually think it might go over my word count goal, which is a good thing because I’ll edit some of it out in the next edit, and my editor (Godz I love her!) when she gets her hands on it.

I have not been working on any of the other books although I have been thinking about how I need to re-write the ending to Hunters’ Betrayal. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Currently, Hunters’ Betrayal is sitting at 33K (33,000 words), but I don’t know how re-writing the ending, which means changing a couple of chapters, will change that. I might have to do another re-write (the version I have is actually the third draft) of the entire thing to make the new ending work, but at least then I’ll be done with it.

I’m still hoping to get all of this done before the end of the month, which means I have fifteen (15) days left to do it. I can get it done. I can!

I still need a title for the novella collection, which includes the following: Warren’s Rage, Hunters’ Betrayal, and Scott’s Investigation. I’m thinking Shifters & Mages Tales but could always use input. What do you guys think?

Shifters & Mages Update #6

I guess I’m supposed to provide an update on my writing and what I’ve been doing with meeting my goals, huh?

I have already failed at the first one, which was to complete the first draft of Warren’s Rage by 10-10-17. Unless I can write 15,000 (15K) words in a single 24-hour period, which I have done… when I didn’t have to work… Yeah… It’s probably not going to happen. I will be trying my best, and we’ll see how far I get, but I’ve adjusted my goals a little bit because there’s some things I hadn’t considered when I created them.

Warren’s Rage

Warren’s Rage is a first draft. It’s never been written before, except for the two or three converging portions mentioned in Puck’s Choice, before. It always takes me longer to write a first draft than to edit or re-write a second.

Original Due Date: 10-10-17
New Due Date: 10-15-17

That should give me plenty of time to write a pretty strong first draft for this novella.

Current Word Count: 11,709
Word Count Goal: 25,000

Scott’s Investigation

This is going to be a complete re-write. There are some tid-bits I’ll be keeping (albiet very few), but most of it’s going to be a re-write based on some things that were changed in Puck’s Choice and will be changed in Jenna’s Story.

Original Due Date: 10-20-17
New Due Date: 12-31-17

There’s quite a bit of plot to include in the new draft that will tie all the characters together, but I’m looking forward to working on it. The word count listed below is not quite accurate since it will be a re-write, but no matter.

Current Word Count: 16,852
Word Count Goal: 25,000

Jenna’s Story

This is not a complete re-write, but I have to add in a new subplot. Originally, Scott’s portions were the subplot, but some things have changed and now it’s not.

Original Due Date: 10-31-17
New Due Date: 12-31-17

The new subplots will make this a second draft, I think, since techically it had gone through a few rounds of editing before I cut all Scott’s parts out, creating a brand new first draft… I’m not certain. I’m calling it a second draft. We’ll go with that.

Current Word Count: 58,236
Word Count Goal: 72,000

Mages’ Sacrifice

This is the one I’ve done the least amount of work on and need to do the most on. It ties up all the loose ends of the series and brings everything to a close. Still, I felt the need to change the due date as well.

Original Due Date: 11-30-17
New Due Date: 12-31-17

Three of the projects all have the same due date. Why? Because I felt that they needed it. I’ll be working the least amount of time on Mages’ Sacrifice, but it’s also the one I’ve done the most planning on and have basically dreamed about since I originally published Puck’s Choice back in 2013, four years ago. It doesn’t worry me that it has the shortest amount of time spent on it. Not on the first draft at least.

Current Word Count: 12,694
Word Count Goal: 72,000

I still need a title for the novella collection. Currently, I’m thinking Shifters & Mages Tales but could always use input. What do you guys think?

Shifters & Mages Update #5

It’s time for the weekly check-in. If you haven’t noticed, it’s being posted on Monday rather than Wednesday. The reason is I’m adding in some new additions, and I decided to switch some posts around to make room for them. So, my future blog schedule is looking like:

Monday: Manuscript Mondays (Shifters & Mages updates for now)
Tuesday: TV/Movie Discussion #1
Thursday: TV/Movie Discussion #2
Friday: Feature Friday

So, that being said, let’s get into this week’s update.

Jenna’s Story

I printed out the story so that I can do a quick rough-edit of it before I start re-writing it. There are some scenes near the end that are going to change, and I want to make sure I change them before I start re-writing to make sure everything jives well.

Warren’s Rage

I’m currently writing the first draft of this. Some of the chapters are easy because some of the scenes were in Puck’s Choice, but the rest is a little harder, especially when explaining how he becomes a shifter. I have ideas. Now it’s just a matter of putting those ideas down.

Scott’s Investigation

Like Jenna’s Story, I’ve printed out the first draft of this to make changes and edit it so that it follows the storyline and how everything will be laid out. Since this is a novella, that shouldn’t take too long, and I’ll be able to do the re-write.

I plan to get all three of these done this month, and if I have time, I’d like to re-write the ending to Hunters’ Betrayal as well. There’s a character that needs introducing, and the best place to bring her in would be the end of Hunters’ Betrayal. It may seem like a lot because of how many projects I’m working on, but the novellas are only going to be about 25,000 (25K) words when finished. (Hunters’ Betrayal‘s first edit sits at 30K, and there are two chapters that repeat a lot of the same information, which I plan to fix during edits. Then Jenna’s Story only needs about 15,000 (15K) to be complete. I think it’s doable. All of it doable.

Especially once I get Dragon NaturallySpeaking up and running for me completely once again.

2017 Quarter Four Goals

For some reason, I always seem to forget about these quarterly goals. I really need to write them down somewhere where I can see them on a daily basis because I’m not getting them done until I realize they are due (basically, when I look back my quarterly goals blog posts). I did get a lot of my goals done, but not in a decent time frame and not in a way I like…

Quarter Three Goals

– Participate in Camp NaNoWriMo (50K words; Hunters’ Betrayal) – COMPLETE
– Finish first on-paper edit of Endless Starry Nights
– Complete first draft of Hunters’ BetrayalCOMPLETE
– Create marketing plan for Puck’s Choice
– Complete first draft of untitled dragon prequel (3 chapters left)

To explain further, I’ll take each goal separately.

Participate in Camp NaNoWriMo (50K words; Hunters’ Betrayal)

I completed this. I succeeded at Camp NaNoWriMo, but I did not write what I wanted to write. In fact, I wrote almost nothing on Hunters’ Betrayal. That’s a lie. I did work on it. I added just under 26,000 (26K) to the manuscript. I spent the rest of Camp working on various other projects as I seem to do every Camp NaNoWriMo. *sigh*

Finish first on-paper edit of Endless Starry Nights

Back in 2015, a friend and I completely outlined Endless Starry Nights with the idea that we’d each write the novel based on the outline in our different writing styles so that readers would end up with two different novels based around the same outline.

Things happened and he had to drop it from his list of things to do, but I continued it and he offered to be an alpha reader, so I sent the roughest rough draft to him, but he hasn’t had a chance to read through any of it yet. I’m not in a hurry. I had originally planned on releasing it next year, but I’m willing to wait because I do want his opinion on it.

Complete first draft of Hunters’ Betrayal

This is done. Remember the 26K I wrote for Camp NaNoWriMo? Well, I took a huge chunk of that writing and turned Hunters’ Betrayal into a novella. I highlighted this plan in my Shifters & Mages series update. I still need to finish Warren and Scott’s tales, because my plan is to release all three novellas as a collection.

But the first draft of Hunters’ Betrayal is done! That’s progress!

Create marketing plan for Puck’s Choice

I’ve actually started on this a little. I have a bunch of ideas at least. Most of them are listed in my publishing plan, but nothing will be finalized until I’m ready to set everything in motion, which is not where I am yet. So this is… half-done? I really shouldn’t have added this to my to-do list until I was closer to being ready for publication and setting everything up to hit the ground running.

Complete first draft of untitled dragon prequel (3 chapters left)

First things first, I remembered the title of this novella. It’s called Spelling an Elemental Dragon and it’s the first in a series about dragon shapeshifters and relates to Merlin and Morgana le Fey.

When I first started planning this novella, I had only ten chapters and each chapter was only about 2K long, but there was so much I was missing and too much I was skipping. So I added a third part and five more chapters to round up the first novella and bring it all into the modern day.

I still may add another part because there still feels like there’s pieces missing. And actually, I might get rid of the parts completely and just create more chapters to fill in the missing information. I don’t know yet. We shall see.

Other Accomplishments

I participated in a blog hop.

Jo Linsdell invited me to take part of a month-long blog hop in the month of August. The idea was to have 31 readers and everyone post a single post during the month. It didn’t quite work out the way it was initially planned, but that’s OK. It was a lot of fun and I had a blast working with the author readers on the blog hop.

I created a logo for my future publishing company.

When CLP was first looking at closing, I was asked if I wanted to take it over, and while I would have loved to, I knew I wasn’t ready for everything (especially the tax side of the business). However, I knew that someday I would want to create a small press with a handful of authors – those who didn’t want to handle the business side of publishing and just wanted to write. I know a couple of people who are already at that stage, but I’m not ready to handle anyone else’s projects but my own at the moment.

Still, the goal is to have everything ready to go by 2020. So, a logo is a good starting point.

I participated in the #Sept100KChallenge.

It was tough. I had to write 3334 daily. It was hard. Really hard.

I started my YouTube channel again.

I’ve been missing since May, and since December/January before that. Yeah… Working on that…

Quarter Four Goals

  • Complete first draft of Warren’s Rage
  • Complete first draft of Mages’ Sacrifice
  • Complete re-write of Jenna’s Story
  • Complete re-write of Scott’s Investigation
  • Start marketing plan for Shifters & Mages series
  • Participate in NaNoWriMo
  • Establish goals for new year
  • Apply to three (3) conventions as an author

We’ll see how these goals go… Feel free to prod me every once in a while and ask me where everything stands. Maybe that will help me stay on track of my goals.

Do you have quarterly goals? How do you measure the amount of success you’ve had each month? Do you track it any way?
